About the Game

Baccarat is one of the oldest casino card games and, also, one of the simplest to play. However, until recently, the games popularity was restricted by the apparent exclusivity of the game. Traditionally played by high rollers in a separate room in the casino and with high minimum wagers, the game had a mystique as being a game for the rich. Baccarat is a card game that pits the player against the dealer with each player aiming to get a hand total closer to 9 than their opponent. This meaning that there are only three possible outcomes: the player wins, the dealer wins or there is a tie. Cards 2-9 are given face value, aces are worth 1 and picture cards are worth ten. Unlike Blackjack, in Baccarat you can never go bust so when a hand total reaches ten or above the first digit is taken away to give the actual hand total (eg 7+5=12 gives hand total 2).

To start the game, you must wager on what the outcome of the game will be (player wins, dealer wins or tie) by placing your chips on the appropriate section of the table. Once this is done, two cards are dealt to each player. The players hand is played first and, depending on the total of the two cards, either a third card is dealt or the two cards are kept to give a final total. The dealer then does the same, depending on their total and the player's total. This process is automatic and follows a pre-defined set of rules. Once all players have their final hands, the winner is decided by which player has the nearest total to nine. If you wager correctly on the players hand you are paid at 1 to 1, if you wager correctly on the dealer you receive 1 to 1 minus commission and if you wager correctly on a tie you are paid out at 9 to 1.
