Just about everyone recognizes the game of craps when they see it, but most people (born after 1950 at least), haven’t the faintest clue how to play, apart from knowing that it involves the throwing of dice.

The reason why players at the craps table always appear to be enjoying themselves more than at the solitary casino games (slots, video poker) or the more ‘sophisticated’ casino games (roulette, blackjack) is simple: they are enjoying themselves more.

Craps is lively and engaging, and let’s be honest, apart from winning boatloads of money, there are few things more gratifying in a casino than shaking and rolling a pair of smooth, hard dice while excitable drunken strangers are cheering all around you.

As with any casino game, learn the rules and terminology before wagering any money. If you need more practice, you can always try out Europa Casino’s ‘fun money’ games, which allow you to practice for free while you get the hang of it.

Craps Terminology

Shooter: The dice-thrower

Come-out roll: The first roll of the game

Natural: As in, rolling a natural, which is seven or eleven on the first roll and means you’ve won

Rolling craps: As in, rolling craps, which is two, three, or twelve on the first roll and means you’ve lost

Point: If you don’t roll a natural or craps, then you’ve rolled either a four, five, six, eight, nine or ten. Whichever of these numbers you’ve rolled has now become your point and you must roll it again to pass (win).

Pass: Winning by rolling a point.

Don’t pass: Losing by rolling a seven after the come-out roll. That’s right, on your first roll, landing a seven meant winning, but on any subsequent rolls it means you’ve lost. (Eleven and craps are no longer relevant at this point in the game).

Come: Come bets are exactly the same as pass, but they can only be placed after the come-out roll. Follow the exact same logic, just move it ahead one step.

Don’t come: See come. Don’t come bets are exactly the same as don’t pass, but they can only be placed after the come-out roll.
