Like many casino games, blackjack has its own special set of terms and expressions that are used to describe the flow of gameplay. For that reason, it’s highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the appropriate jargon and terminology as you set out to learn how to play blackjack online. Here’s a sampling of some common terms and expressions that are used in blackjack:
Split: If you’re dealt two cards of equal value, you can choose to divide them into two separate hands, each with its own bet. The dealer will then place an extra card on each original card, and you proceed, playing each new hand separately. Splitting is available only on the initial two cards in a hand you’re dealt.
Surrender: If your initial hand shows slim potential for beating the dealer, opting to surrender allows you to reclaim half of your bet rather than be forced to p lay the hand out and lose the whole thing. Experienced blackjack players know to use the option to surrender wisely, as it could save them a good amount of money in the long run.
Natural: Also known simply as “blackjack”, this term refers to having a 10 (or a picture card with the value of 10) and ace as your initial cards. It also generally means that you’ve won (unless the dealer has also been dealt a natural).
Stand: Opting to not take any further action with your hand. This is the generally accepted move-of-choice when your initial two cards are high and drawing a further card might lead you to bust.
Double Down: When the odds appear in your favor, doubling down allows you to double your initial bet and your potential winnings. Doubling down is only available for the initial first two cards you’ve been dealt and is most commonly done when you’ve got a total of 10 or 11 as it’s impossible to bust upon drawing one card.
Hit: Also known as asking for another card from the dealer. Refer to the strategy charts to learn when you should and shouldn’t hit.
Hard Hand: When your hand includes an ace counted as 11.
Soft hand: When your hand includes an ace counted as 1.
